It’s Time For Brexit Detox

Brexit detox is necessary to deflect divisions among colleagues and friends.

Enough is enough. For more than the two years now, I am breathing Brexit topics a day in, day out. I am hardly alone in this experience. The whole UK is going through the same motion. We are constantly bombarded with Brexit in the media or wherever we turn to.

In an interview with Oprah, Michael Obama shared how she would wake up in the middle of the night to see her husband looking in the ceiling, all worried about income inequality.

Let me tell you, I have been there too. I would wake up in the middle of the night to find my husband sleepless over Brexit. I know exactly what Michael was going through. Every wife or a partner of a politician knows it.

The public cannot see that side, but being a politician is not an easy ride. It is hard job especially with problems we are facing as a country at the moment.

Brexit detox is necessary to deflect divisions among colleagues and friends

Growing up in Serbia, a turbulent country where politics defined people’s lives, made me politically aware from an early age. We didn’t have the choice of not becoming politically aware. I recognise similar political engagement of people at the moment in Britain.

I am an artist and my circle of friends and colleagues differs from my husband’s. Before Brexit, no one would talk about politics and suddenly it is all my friends talk about.

Discussing Brexit is contagious. It is addictive and people can’t get enough. The more we talk about it the more issues out of it arise. It gives people something to converse about on occasions when they have none topics in common. 

Brexit talk has become a new normal for “How do you do”?

It is officially Brexit mania

We have the choice to focus on what we wish to experience in our day. Therefore,  let’s try to unwind from Brexit and be mindful about how we spend our energy. Let’s notice what we invest our thoughts into and what we give our focus to.

Let’s choose one day in a week at least when we won’t switch on the telly to see the latest Brexit news. Instead, let’s go to nature, the trip to a gallery or cultural event, catch up with friends we haven’t seen since Christmas, or do something fun as a family.

If someone mentions Brexit, stay out of it. Put the boundaries and just say: ” If you don’t mind I prefer not to talk about Brexit today.”

It is your right to be free from constant psychological pressures, contentions debates and tensions of Brexit.

Don’t get involved in Facebook and Twitter comments. I responded to social media posts, to find myself one hour after, depleted from negativity, mean exchange or just pointless talks. What a waste of time.

Instead, I’ve learned to invest an hour of my life in meditation or to just sit in peace listening to my own thoughts, laughing with my son.

That is much better than debating Brexit with people who are not making laws and whose profession ain’t the one of a politician. It’s time for Brexit detox.
