The Best Question You Can Ask To Uncover Your Purpose

How well do you know yourself?

“Who am I” is not an experiment or a mere question of curiosity. Until the question tears you apart, you will not know what is inside it. When the question screams, it will not be directed outside, but inside. Then, the scream will naturally catch fire and find light. No one can stop it.—Sadhguru

If you have been practicing meditation for some time, you probably know that one of the first things you will be asked to do, is to meditate on I am. You would be surprised to find out how many of us have struggled at some point to discover our purpose, or have never really sat down to reflect on this basic question of personal identity.  If you have not done it so far, you should try it. Once you discover your I am, you will be able to start uncovering your life purpose and see if you are on the right path.

Every time I go to the United States, I notice that people are very engaged with all kinds of spiritual quests. These types of conversations are frequently present in my friends’ circle in New York and California, from Sadhguru teachings on the nature of our existence, Deepak Chopra retreats to sharing experiences about mindfulness and kundalini. I’ve read many books on purpose and talked to spiritual teachers about finding one, but no matter what you do,  it all starts with answering a basic, internal question: Who Am I?

Are you living with purpose?

To know your purpose means to know your true self so that everything in your life can be centered around it. In the mission statement of The Wives of Westminster, a purpose-centric life is paramount. Centering the content, my personal stories, things I like and am interested in talking about around the purpose I’ve defined for myself and this platform, was crucial for the Wives of Westminster project.

The best advice I can give, the same one I was given by spiritual teachers is: Know who you are. This will especially come handy when you encounter someone who will try to throw you off your ground by telling you who you are not. If you do not know who you are, you will place yourself in a position to be wrongly labeled.

Without knowing our purpose, our life stories cannot unfold and soon enough we can find ourselves living someone else’s life.

Pastor Joel Osteen is a great advocate of an “I am” principle and explaining how anything that follows “I am” is what we invite to our experience.

Whatever follows I am, will eventually find you”, he said in his book, The Power of I Am.

“Who am I” is the most important question to ask yourself, the one that will move you into your life purpose. Words have power. Choose to speak your own truth. Tell your story. Announce to the world who you are. What’s the better way to live than to be yourself.
